Reconnect with Qingming: Are you ready?

Every year during Qingming, a time dedicated to remembering and honouring our ancestors and deceased loved one, we gather and perform the rituals that have been passed down through generations. However, as the world becomes more technology-driven, there’s a growing disconnect from these traditions. Many of us, especially the Gen Z, observe the rituals without truly understanding their significance or the correct steps involved. Often, we simply just follow the instructions of our parents and elders, with our knowledge limited to offering joss sticks, without grasping the deeper meaning behind those acts.

This gradual loss of cultural heritage highlights the importance of preserving and understanding our rituals. It’s not just about going through the motions; it’s about connecting with our roots, honouring those who came before us, and passing these traditions on to future generations.

To help bridge this gap and make these practices more accessible, Papan has prepared a helpful guide that outlines the steps. Whether you’re new to these traditions or simply need a refresher, this guide will support you in   keeping the spirit of Qingming alive and meaningful.

1. Greet Tua Pek Kong First : Just as we greet elders first when visiting someone’s home, during Qingming, it’s customary to pay respects to Tua Pek Kong before honouring our ancestors and loved ones.
2. Set Up Offerings : Place the prepared fruits and favourite foods of your loved ones on the table. Light the joss sticks and start paying respects, beginning with the elders and then the younger family members.
3. Burn Joss Paper Offerings : After the session, burn the joss paper offerings, ensuring the paper lists the deceased’s name, relationship, and the date of burning.
4. Clean Up and Enjoy the Food : Once prayers are completed, clean up the table and enjoy the food that was offered—it’s believed the food is to provide peace and protection from the ancestors. Don’t forget to let your loved ones know you’re leaving.
